The brief
A two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment whose layout needed to feel more modern and open, with the kitchen at the centre of the change. Both bathrooms, the floors, the walls and every door were due for renewal.
The design idea
Classic details on a modern plan. Opening up the kitchen created a more spacious layout, while the walls received panel mouldings and the bedrooms large statement artworks. The result is softer and more tailored than bare minimalism, but still calm and easy to live with. Brass appears in small doses, on a screen profile, a tap or a light, so the classic details never feel heavy.
Materials & palette
Panel mouldings in soft white, quartz-vinyl flooring throughout (laid in herringbone in the hall), boldly veined white stone, vertical copper-toned tile, fluted glass, brushed brass and a touch of walnut. Every wall was repainted, and the engineering and finishing elements were updated.
Room by room
Bedrooms
Sheer curtains run from ceiling to floor to make the rooms feel taller, with globe chandeliers and layered bedding. One bedroom is built around a large slate-blue crane artwork, the other around a blossom print framed by wall moulding.
Hall
Moulded wall panels, abstract art and a herringbone floor, with a curved walnut cabinet that softens the corner. The mouldings frame the art rather than compete with it.
Main bathroom
A veined stone vanity under a round backlit mirror, ribbed copper-toned tile, a fluted glass screen with a brass profile, and a stone-lined niche with open shelves. The mirror is backlit, so the stone glows softly in the evening.
Second bathroom
Vertical copper-toned tile around a bathtub, a floating vanity and a backlit mirror.
